Natural Hair Appreciation -Nappily Ever After Movie Review

I remember months ago seeing Sanaa Lathan on Instagram with a bald head. I was curious to know why she cut it but I was Also amazed by how beautiful she looked with a shaved head. For those of you that do not know Nappily Ever After is a movie that discusses the value of natural hair. Sanaa Lathan played the role of a woman name Violet Jones.   Violet was a girl that had an obsession with her looks. As a child, her mother focused on her looks so much that she had a fetish of being perfect. Growing up in an era where natural hair frowned upon Violent spent so much time doing her hair to fit in with her peers.

When Women Cut Thier Hair its Time For A Change.

That all changes when her boyfriend left her because she was too perfect and too obsessed with her looks. She went in a panic after the breakup and decided to cut all of her hair off. I love this part of the movie because I cut my hair off after my relationship ended. I did not shave my hair off. But I did cut a tremendous amount of my hair off. I felt that cutting my hair was a way for me to start over and reshape myself into a different person.

New Hair New Woman

People would always yell at me for cutting my hair, but I always knew it would grow back so I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it. Cutting my hair was the way I gained my confidence back after my breakup. I admire the women she became when she cut her hair. She begins to love herself, and she stopped letting her hair determine her beauty.

Natural Hair Struggle.

like this movie because it demonstrates the reasons why women are uncomfortable wearing their natural hair. Most of the time it starts when you’re a child. Children can be cruel and mean, and they can make you feel sorry for being different. As a child, I faced the same struggles.  I use to beg my mother to straighten my hair because I was ashamed of my thick curly hair. I was made fun of and teased about my hair even as an adult, and it made me insecure about my natural hair.

Reason Why You Should Watch This Movie.

This movie was very relatable. This movie made women realize that hair does not make you who you are. Your hair is only apart of you, and that you control your hair, your hair does not control you or your life. Did I stop wearing weave? NO, I can’t lie, I probably won’t. But I do not wear it as much as I use to. There were times I wouldn’t walk out of the house if I didn’t have weave in my hair. Now its different.  I love wearing different colors and crazy hairstyles. However, after watching this movie, I have been wearing my natural hair out more. This movie was extraordinarily, and I believe anybody who ever felt insecure about their natural hair should watch this movie. This movie is super powerful.
